Your First Step on the Road
The G1 is Ontario's beginner licence, issued after passing the written knowledge test at a DriveTest centre. It comes with strict supervision and time-of-day restrictions, but it is the essential gateway to on-road training and, ultimately, your full G licence.
What You Need to Know
Eligibility Requirements
You must be at least 16 years old, pass a vision test, and pay the applicable DriveTest fee. Landed immigrants and new residents may apply using foreign identification documents.
The Knowledge Test
A 40-question written test drawn from the Ontario Driver's Handbook, covering road signs and rules of the road. You must score at least 80% (32/40) to pass and receive your G1 permit.
G1 Restrictions
G1 drivers must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with 4+ years experience, maintain a 0.00 BAC, cannot drive on 400-series highways or between midnight and 5 a.m., and must not carry more passengers than seatbelts.
Path to G2
After holding a G1 for at least 12 months (8 with an approved BDE course), you are eligible to take the G1 exit road test and advance to a G2 — unlocking independent, unrestricted driving.
